Carmen Adriana Alvarez, MD
Born in New York City, Dr. Alvarez spent her formative years in Ecuador, South America. She did her undergraduate work in biochemistry at Manhattan College and graduated with a doctorate in medicine from SUNY at Buffalo.
Dr. Alvarez did her residency in the Department of Family Medicine at UB and then completed a Faculty Development Fellowship in Urban Medicine at the University of Michigan.
After starting and directing the Niagara Family Health Center, an outpatient center with Buffalo General Hospital, she began ministering to diabetics in the Western New York Hispanic community. Rather than applying general treatment principles, she directly engaged patients with therapies that fit their lifestyles. She believes in the philosophy “practice as partnership” where patients discuss, learn, and take responsibility for their care.
She married and became the mother of two beautiful daughters and then ventured into geriatric medicine and nursing homes with Elder Medical Group. She subsequently joined R&B Medical Group in 1999 where she enjoys practicing adult family medicine and treating the medical complications of obstetrics.
Throughout the years she has enjoyed medical treks and research trips to Swaziland, Kenya, and India. Some of these medical mission trips were with Dr. Richard Lee. Presently, she is involved in consultation work with the Travel Clinic.
When she is not attending to her family, she maintains a love for cooking traditional Ecuadorian food, reading, and traveling.
