Dr Alvarez was born in New York City.  She did her undergraduate work in biochemistry at Manhattan College and graduated with a doctorate in Medicine from SUNY at Buffalo.  Dr Alvarez did her residency in the Department of Family Medicine at UB and completed a Faculty Development Fellowship in Urban Medicine at the University of Michigan.
